About HydroPhos

Pushing forward nutrient reclamation in the wastewater industry.

OUR STORY

From the College Classroom to the National Stage

Our company started out as a group of friends entering our college's Social Venture and Innovation Challenge with an idea born out of an Ecology class. We realized we had stumbled upon a good idea when we won. As we continued to enter other competitions, we were able to meet industry professionals and successful investors who saw our vision and a certain spark in our team. The financial support from these competitions and guidance from mentors has allowed us to take this idea into the lab and develop our product. We are a hardworking, scrappy, and fun team who is ready to run and take on these major global issues.

  • Produce an estimated 980,000 pounds of phosphorus per year, which is enough to fertilize about 80,000 acres of land, with the crops generated sufficient to feed 80,000 people

  • Prevent several tons of methane emissions, which are 28 to 36 times as potent as CO2 emissions

  • Preserve an aquatic ecosystem, and revitalize the fishing, real estate, and tourism industries that rely on that ecosystem’s health

  • Offset the environmental destructive and sometimes exploitative effects of the phosphate mining industry

  • Put downward pressure on phosphorus prices, making fertilizer and therefore food progressively more affordable

  • Enhance our country’s resource independence by creating a domestic, sustainable, and non-depleting source of phosphorus

Once our technology is fully developed, a single HydroPhos Solutions phosphorus filtration and reclamation project at an average-sized wastewater treatment plant holds the potential to:
